everybody’s free (to wear sunscreen)

Speaking of summer, here’s something to think about. This was actually inspired by Aggie’s blog entry Tanned. The song is by Baz Luhrmann and was first released in 1999. You can find the complete lyrics below. It’s a bit long but definitely worth the read.

Ladies and gentlemen
of the class of ’99…

Wear sunscreen.

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience.I will dispense this advice now…

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh nevermind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded. But trust me, in 20 years you’ll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can’t grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked….You’re not as fat as you imagine.

Don’t worry about the future, or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubblegum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that blindside you at 4pm on some idle tuesday.

Do one thing everyday that scares you.

Sing.

Don’t be reckless with other people’s hearts, don’t put up with people who are reckless with yours.

Floss.

Don’t waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes you’re behind… the race is long, and in the end, it’s only with yourself.

Remember the compliments you receive, forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how.

Keep your old love letters, throw away your old bank statements.

Stretch.

Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do with your life… the most interesting people I know didn’t know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives, some of the most interesting 40 year olds I know still don’t.

Get plenty of calcium.

Be kind to your knees, you’ll miss them when they’re gone.

Maybe you’ll marry, maybe you won’t, maybe you’ll have children, maybe you won’t, maybe you’ll divorce at 40, maybe you’ll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary… what ever you do, don’t congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself either – your choices are half chance, so are everybody else’s.

Enjoy your body, use it every way you can. Don’t be afraid of it, or what other people think of it, it’s the greatest instrument you’ll ever own.

Dance… even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room.

Read the directions, even if you don’t follow them.

Do NOT read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly.

Brother and sister together we’ll make it through. Someday your spirit will take you and guide you there. I know you’ve been hurting but I’ve been waiting to be there for you. And I’ll be there, just tell me now, whenever I can.

Get to know your parents, you never know when they’ll be gone for good.

Be nice to your siblings; they are the best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.

Understand that friends come and go, but for the precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle because the older you get, the more you need the people you knew when you were young.

Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard. Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.

Travel.

Accept certain inalienable truths, prices will rise, politicians will philander, you too will get old, and when you do you’ll fantasize that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.

Respect your elders.

Don’t expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund, maybe you have a wealthy spouse, but you never know when either one might run out.

Don’t mess too much with your hair, or by the time you’re 40, it will look 85.

Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it’s worth.

But trust me on the sunscreen…

Brother and sister together we’ll make it through. Someday your spirit will take you and guide you there. I know you’ve been hurting but I’ve been waiting to be there for you. And I’ll be there, just tell me now, whenever I can. Everybody’s free.

to swim or not to swim

Published by B under Sari-sari

Sorry I haven’t been around much these past few days. I just finished one of my projects and thought that I needed a little rest. And I’m also a little lazy these past few days, all I want is to watch TV and sleep. And when I do get online, I just play with my virtual pets.

My sister and her family and I went joyriding for the past two weekends and I’m hoping we’ll be doing it again tomorrow. The first weekend we went to Tagaytay and just had dinner and last weekend we went to Laguna to scout for a private pool and we dropped by Enchanted Kingdom on our way home. I hope tomorrow we leave early and go to Nasugbu to scout for a beach resort. :)

So, to swim or not to swim? That is the question. Yep we’re not sure yet if we’re going swimming this summer. We still haven’t found a decent beach resort and our only hope is in Nasugbu, Batangas because my sister doesn’t want to travel too far because of the kids. We also scouted for a private pool in Laguna but it’s either the houses are already old or the rates are too high, which we think is not worth for a pool (we’d rather spend the money on a beach resort). Still, I went shopping for some beach wear yesterday.

Well, my old bathing suit already gave up on me so I bought a new one while I still have money. No, I don’t have a body like that, only the swimsuit. Haha! This one’s from Marks & Spencer but the one I bought has a straight neckline and only has a single strap but has the same print and colors. I know it is a bit pricey but believe me it is definitely worth it. My previous one was also from M&S and I’ve had it since 1999, and that’s the only store I found with plus sizes swimsuits (but I didn’t look around really).

The aqua socks is just a cheap one from SM department store. I didn’t feel the need to buy a branded one because I know this one will already serve it’s sole purpose which is to protect my feet from rocks, broken glass, corals and those nasty sea urchins. My old one was also a cheap one from SM and I only got rid of it because I was too lazy to clean it and the sand already stuck to it. And look, it matches the color of my swimsuit! Haha!

Maybe next time, if I have more than enough, then I’ll buy a pair of booties. But right now, the next items on my wishlist are fins and a new set of mask and snorkle, which will be my fourth set already. My first set was a Mares, my second set was a Sherwood, and my third was a US Divers. I lost the first one in Quezon and right now I’m using the Sherwood mask and the US Divers snorkle. I really want to buy a new set and maybe one more for my nephew but I’m looking for the US Divers mask, snorkle and fins set and I’m not sure if there’s one available here in the country. If not then I have to ask my cousin to buy it online for me and wait for my brother-in-law to bring it home this December (he’ll be leaving again for the US this June). If you’re here in the PI and saw one, please let me know where I can find it. Thanks!

After shopping, we had a buffet dinner and Triple V. I ate mostly Japanese and Dad’s dessert. And I didn’t eat much because we already ate at McDo while waiting for my sis to get out of her office. Hay… ang sarap kumain! LOL!

So, I have to go now. Here’s to hoping that I’ll be able to go to the beach this summer!!! :) TTFN!

why forgotten?

Published by B under Forgotten

I talked to my best friend the other day and she asked me about the title of my blog. Why forgotten? Like what I’ve said on my very first post, forgotten because that’s what I am… forgotten by some people who are very close to my heart. Totoo nga yung sinasabi nilang “Out of sight, out of mind.” But not with me, I never forget about the people that I really care about, parati ko silang iniisip that it hurts to think na hindi man lang nila ko naaalala. To those that I care so much, naiintindihan ko sila pero minsan nakakatampo pero okay lang kase mahal ko naman sila eh.

To my college barkada naman, sana intindihin niyo na lang ako. Aside from my financial instability, I have other reasons pa why I don’t go to your gimmicks anymore but I’d rather not discuss it with anyone anymore. Carl’s supposed to know everything and he could explain it to you very well but alam niyo naman si Carl eh, madalas he’s not paying attention to what I’m saying kaya parang walang alam. Si Armin naman tinutulugan ako pag nag-iinuman kami kaya wala ding alam. I actually mentioned na dati one of the reasons baket hindi ako nagsasasama but parang wala lang, it was easily forgotten and ayoko naman nang ungkatin pa. Like what I’ve said, sana intindihin niyo na lang ako.
