I was surfing Nostalgia Manila the other day and food from my childhood days suddenly came flashing back to me. Junk food, that is, and I miss it! I don’t know if you guys are familiar with any of these…
Wonder Boy
Wrapped in white plastic with a cartoon of a boy riding a spaceship, I think. These are round chips that is barbecue flavored and about three pieces per pack. I still can buy these in Malabon’s market.
M Egg
These are milk flavored candy tablets. I love these! It comes in white packaging too, three pieces per pack. It’s like Haw Haw (Milk flavored candy blocks in light blue pillow packs) but a little softer.
Milo
I don’t really know if this is the real name for it. They’re little chewy chocolate blocks that’s like clay in texture.
Tira-tira
Now this one’s confusing… I remember in college that I told somebody about these candies and he brought me some but what he brought were red candies that’s like candy canes in texture. What I was referring to were red sticks that were translucent, kinda like Fox’s candy, and was thick as a pencil and about 4 or 5 inches long. And everyone I asked also referred to the candy cane textured ones so I was the one who’s probably wrong about the name.
Cherry Balls
Now this one, I think everyone’s familiar with this. Who could forget those sweet little red gum balls or the multi-colored ones? Which leads me to the next one and also the one after that.
Big Boy
I love these too! I just keep popping these pink gums into my mouth.
Bazooka Joe
I loved reading the comics that comes with these and sometimes I even get two comics in one gum! But I like Big Boy better than Bazooka Joe because it’s softer. And chewing on these tires my jaw.
There are lots more but I can’t remember all of them right now. I even remember that a bottle of Pop Cola, and I mean one bigger than the solo size, costs only P1.75. And I also remember those red lollipops that’s on a long, thin red sticks and the plastic cover’s colored red and green which, if I’m not mistaken, looked like a strawberry print.
Also, one time my friends and I were on our way to Anilao and we were singing along to Bob Marley’s Guava Jelly. Then I wondered aloud how guava jelly tastes like and they were a little surprised that I haven’t tasted it yet. They said they’d eaten that when they were kids and it was actually their fave. Then they kept teasing me that I don’t have a childhood because I didn’t eat guava jelly when I was a kid.
Haha!
Those were the days…
